four years ago i remember walking into the college station airport with my mom---she had my big huge winter coat with her and our arms were full of my belongings; we barley fit it all on the plane. she and i made it to provo, utah and then walked around campus---it was all so surreal. we organized my dorm room, met my new employer, and i met my roommates. the day she left i thought i would never stop feeling homesick, and to top it off a scorpion {which i'm assuming had climbed in my suitcase} bit my toe! the future seemed daunting and hard. high school was comfortable; mom and dad were there to take care of my physical needs, i had friends, and i knew the high school building like the back of my hand.
on my second day in provo four years ago, i color-coded a campus map and walked to each of my classes to get the route down, and to memorize the buildings. now i know those buildings like the back of my hand. campus seems so small compared to what i thought four years ago! i now walk around on campus and recognize professors and classmates, i've learned to cook for myself, and i've built great friendships---i even found met husband because of it all!
one month from today i'll graduate from brigham young university! it is all so surreal: i didn't register for classes for next semester, i never bought my BYU planner for the next year, and i haven't searched and searched on Amazon for the best textbook deals. all of the sudden it's all over! i won't miss the stress of homework, tests, and projects, but i will miss learning on this fabulous campus. in these past four years, i've learned more then just about the english language and about editing; i've learned about life. byu has taught me how to organize, to plan, to delegate, to work hard, and to try my best---even when it seems impossible.
this quote says it best:
"Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not; it is the first lesson that ought to be learned; and, however early a man's training begins, it is probably the last lesson that he learns thoroughly." -Thomas Henry Huxley
i will always be grateful for BYU, and i'm excited for this new phase of life; i get to keep learning. isn't that what life's all about?
Jess, we are so excited for you! For what you've accomplished and what lies ahead!! Congrats!
